it's not just the chance of intelligent life forming, it's also avoiding massive natural extinction level events such as huge meteor impacts. 4 billion years is a long time to avoid that sort of thing

What about the early years of the universe after the Big Bang. Apparently the universe was 0-50 degrees warm so there is a theory that life thrived IN space. And also where life started.
