Nah they've existed for a lot longer than that. I've traced many lines of my family tree back to the 1500s and they all have last names. Spelling wasn't necessarily set in stone yet though.

Not an inch true to that... Our surnames stem from after the plague, 1370s when more people started to migrate. My own family line I can easily trace back to 1565.
