Replying to @meaggonecrazy1207 “Look what I just did Mama.” - 3 yr old Emi said as she made her way down Sunrise bowl. . I responded, “Emi, amazing! How does that feel?” There is a lot of intention (and years of practicing) in this response. I posted a Reel yesterday showing Emi using her “Papa strength” to make it down this steep slope. In my caption I talked about what bravery means to me. I shared that to me, bravery isn’t overcoming fear. It’s being able to express how you feel in the moment- speaking your truth and making a decision that’s best for you. I followed up with ideas of how the can support bravery. But something I wanted to add is that I hope to teach my kids bravery by helping them process the emotions they feel in the moment- be it joy, pride, hesitation, overstimulated. . When I ask, “how does that make you feel?” My hope is to give Emi the space to decide how this makes her feel- letting her explore the complex emotions, instead of me imposing on her how we perceive her achievement. And in exploring those emotions, I believe it helps one build self love and confidence. Do I ever flat out praise. Sure I do, I can’t help myself- especially when it’s something they’ve done for the first time and I’m caught up in the moment. But most of the time I’m trying to shift away from praising the outcome, and instead focusing on the effort, and honoring the emotions they feel about it, not my own. #raisingkids #motherhoodjourney #believeinyourself #skiingwithkids
