@nerdyaboutnature: Despite being such large trees, Coast Redwoods actually have surprisingly shallow root systems that will inosculate, or bond with one another, which helps them create a stable foundation in the soils. This means when the winds blow, it’s not just one tree with shallow roots trying to hold itself up, but the whole forest supporting one another. These bonded roots also help withstand erosional forces alongside rivers, which creates narrow, deep and meandering river channels that helps create all sorts of habitat for aquatic species. Here, we can see how when a tree has collapsed into the river, it creates a hard point that deflects water off of it, scouring a pool and thus a riffle on the backside of that pool as the water is forced to the opposite bank. Mature complex forest ecosystems like this have evolved in ways to work together not only for the benefit of individual trees or the species, but in ways that creates complex ecological processes that allows for a wide range of critters to call these places home. Pretty dang awesome if you ask me! Sustainable Sarah B :
This is why we can’t just cut down trees and plant new ones. These are ecosystems!

Not to mention they turn into mother trees, nurseries for the next generation of redwoods.

I need to go here, there are barely any forests in Ireland at all. It's basically all commercial non-native monoculture trees.

Do other tree species like Douglas Fir behave in a similar “communal” way in terms of their root structure?
