💜 DOMESTIC VIOLENCE DOESN’T JUST LEAVE SCARS YOU CAN SEE. IT CAN LEAVE WOUNDS THAT THE WORLD NEVER SEES. Today is World Mental Health Day, and we must talk about the connection between domestic violence and mental health. Behind closed doors, abuse can steal a person's sense of safety, confidence, peace, and self-worth. Survivors may struggle with anxiety, depression, fear, trauma, sleep disturbances, or the lingering effects of constantly living on edge. For some, the emotional impact continues long after the abuse has ended. And we must not forget the children who witness domestic violence. Even when the abuse isn't directed at them, exposure to violence in the home can affect their emotional well-being, relationships, sense of security, and understanding of what love should look like. The violence may stop, but the healing doesn't automatically begin when the relationship ends. As a Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Advocate, I believe we must look beyond the visible signs of abuse. We must stop asking survivors why they stayed and start asking what support they need to heal. We must stop judging their reactions to trauma and start creating spaces where they feel safe enough to speak. Mental health awareness must include the mental health consequences of abuse. Healing requires compassion, understanding, access to support, and the freedom to rebuild a life without fear. Today, on World Mental Health Day, let us remember that survivors are more than what happened to them. They deserve peace. Their children deserve safety. And their healing deserves to be taken seriously. Silence has a lot of supporters. Make awareness your business. Standing with survivors. Advocating for healing. Breaking the silence. LET'S TALK: Why do you believe we need to talk more openly about the impact domestic violence has on mental health, especially for children who grow up witnessing it? Share your thoughts below. Let's turn awareness into action. 💜 💚 #worldmentalhealthday #DomesticViolenceAwareness #MentalHealthMatters #BreakTheSilence
