Duntrune Castle was originally built by Clan MacDougall in the 12th century; latterly being taken over by Clan Campbell. This resulted in continuous conflict between the two clans. Notably, in 1644 an attempt was made to besiege the castle by the rival MacDonalds under Alasdair Mac Colla. This event has led to the belief that Duntrune Castle is haunted by the ghost of a handless piper. According to one story, the Macdonald piper was sent into the castle as a spy, but was found out. He was imprisoned, but played his pipes to warn the Macdonalds that their ‘surprise’ attack was now expected. Alasdair Mac Colla retreated, and the piper’s hands were cut off by the Campbells. Duntrune was eventually sold in 1792 to the Malcolms of Poltalloch, and is presently home to the current chief of Clan Malcolm. Interestingly, the gateposts of Skyfall lodge, James Bond’s childhood home in the film of the same name, were also modelled after those at Duntrune.
