@happy.smallholding: Welcome back to the grow along. This week we’re planting our first and second early potatoes! I had planned to post this next week, but I’ve had a lot of requests for it so decided to post it early in case you wanted to plant this weekend 😊 If you’ve been chitting your potatoes, by now they will look something like the ones in the video, with little shoots coming out. If you haven’t been chitting that’s fine too - you can still plant them now. You can grow potatoes in the ground or in containers. Starting with the container method. I’m using a large pot with holes in the bottom. You could use anything - a bucket or even old compost bags, just make sure you add some drainage holes. You want the pot to be big to allow enough room to add more compost as the potatoes grow, to protect them from frost and to prevent the tubers from being exposed to light. Take your pot and fill it with about 5cm of compost. Place your 2 potatoes into the pot with the shoots facing up. Rub off any shoots on the bottom if there shoots on 2 sides. Chuck another 5cm of compost into the pot on top of the potatoes. To plant in the ground, make a hole about 15cm deep and pop your potato in, shoots facing up. Plant your potatoes 30cm apart in rows 60cm apart. Potatoes aren’t frost hardy, but they are safe as long as they are buried beneath the soil so keep earthing up as shoots appear. I’ll show you how to do this in a couple of weeks. #potatoes #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
