It’s killing your interviews. “If your answer to ‘Why do you want to work here?’ sounds anything like ‘You guys seem great’ or ‘I need a job’…you’re finished. That’s how you get the polite rejection email by 5 p.m.” Here’s what you’ve got to understand—this question isn’t just a warm-up question. It’s a fit check. They want to know: Do you get them? In other words, have you done enough research on the company to figure out your “why”? And are you someone who can walk in and immediately make a difference? Generic answers? That’s a red flag that either you didn’t prep OR that you’re not smart enough to come up with a convincing reason as to why you wanna work there. Too many people just go to the About Us page and recite the same old stuff - ‘I’m passionate about this industry.’ Okay, but how does that connect to their reality, what they’re building, who they’re serving, and the problems they’re hiring you to solve? Here’s your answer: I want to work here for three reasons.  (1) Your company does meaningful work in an industry that excites me. (2) Based on my research, there is tremendous growth ahead, and I’d like to contribute to that growth (3) My expertise aligns well with the role and I know I can come in and move the needle when it comes to impact on the process, the team, and the bottom line whether that be directly or indirectly. That’s how you get the job.
