the axe works fine for smaller pieces of wood that it was created for. you need a bigger axe

sharpen or get it sharpened by someone, also don't hit 2 metal objects together, chips of metal can shoot off and hurt you, get a plastic mallet or a wooden one, plastic lasts longer though

First off that a hatchet not an axe , secondly hatchet aren't used for splitting logs, axes are big hatchets are small handles axe long handles
