In the liner notes of the 2013 reissue of the TOYPAJ vinyl, Mark told the story of how First Date came about: “We recorded the demos for Take Off Your Pants and Jacket in the same small practice studio where we wrote Enema of the State. After a couple of weeks we had amassed about a dozen songs. We were proud of our work. The songs were different from anything we’d written before. The tracks were catchy, but with a definitive edge. We invited our manager to the studio. He was the first person outside of the band to hear the new songs and we were excited to show them off. In the control room, he listened quietly to the tracks one by one. At the end, we turned to him with an ‘Am I right or what?’ expectation, to which he said, ‘I think it’s really cool, but I don’t hear that THING. That blink-182 good-time summer anthem thing...’ WHAT?! Are you ******* kidding me?! Summertime anthem good-time whatever the **** you just said? Tom and I were furious. How could someone demean our masterpiece?! Do you not GET it? You want a ******* single? I’ll write you the cheesiest, catchiest, throwaway fucking summertime single you’ve ever heard. I drove home, grabbed my guitar, sat on the floor, and wrote ‘The Rock Show’ in ten minutes.
