We will never forget this night. It’s hard to believe that our car breaking down on our first day in Afghanistan led to making forever friends in a country we never imagined we’d visit. Getting to sit with the women in their homes was one of my most special memories of the 140 countries we’ve visited. Their kindness is unlike anything I have ever experienced before. They made me feel so incredibly welcomed and loved. As I sat there smiling and laughing with them, I kept thinking when in my life did I ever imagine I’d be sitting here surrounded by women in their home in Afghanistan, and how grateful I am for these experiences and the people we’ve been able to meet throughout our travels. The other thing that stood out to me is what we have continually learned throughout our travels, that people around the world are so much more similar than we are different. These women were beautiful, kind, smart, funny, joyful, amazing women. Yet why me? Why do I have so many freedoms when the very few opportunities they do have are continuing to be restricted? I was so grateful to have the opportunity to speak with them (I didn’t record much for privacy reasons), and left so in awe of their incredible strength, joy, and kindness despite everything they are experiencing. Hud also had such a special time connecting with the men downstairs, and it was the best way to end our time in Afghanistan. We made lifelong friends here, and are so glad our car broke down that first day in Afghanistan.
