I've never quite understood if you're not stuck or broke down why you don't just back up or go forward off the tracks, paying for the damage to the railroad arm is way cheaper than your whole vehicle

As an ex trucker, he should not moved up unless he had enough room to totally cross. They were probably waiting for someone in a car to move so both could have moved up.
