I worked at a chain pizza spot, was AM at 17. And my GM would do this to me all the time, but lose it if I just honored it on my own accord (I had authority). And then I'd get 0 tip + insulted

Tiping is also on the value of the food served. Not on the discounted price you paid! Just cause you saved 10 to 50% doesn’t mean it took that much less effort to serve!
