Man Loses Legs In Insanely Dumb Insurance Scheme #usa #men How much would I have to pay you to chop your own legs off? But for this young man in Taiwan, it’s only 1.3 million dollars. Right, he goes by the name Zhang and in high school he befriended the worst person imaginable, going by the name Liao. This story, though, happens well after graduation, when they’re both 23 years old. Right, because apparently they reconnect, and Liao has some bad news. Supposedly claiming that gangsters are coming after him, which, for some reason, Zhang believes. But Liao’s like, don’t worry my dude, I’ve got a plan. So first, they buy several expensive policies for life insurance, travel insurance, and accident insurance. Then, just days later (because that’s not suspicious), they ride around on a motorbike at night. Allegedly to lend some credibility to the alibi that Zhang got frostbite from the cold air. This even though the temperature that night never dipped below 42 degrees Fahrenheit. Anyway, they eventually return home, and that’s when the insane part of this plot begins. With Liao allegedly restraining Zhang to a chair using cable ties, then submerging his friend’s feet in a plastic bucket filled with dry ice. And there he sits, from 2 a.m. until 12:20 p.m. enduring the pain for over 10 hours. So by the end of it, he removes his “legs” from the bucket, and they’re a necrotic, swollen, frostbitten nightmare. But of course, that’s exactly what they intended, so they rush over to the emergency room as if they simply lost track of time riding around on their motorbike. And immediately the doctors are like, this is sus. Right, first of all, we’re in Taiwan, a subtropical country; you don’t get frostbite here. Second, his legs show no shoe or sock marks. And third, his injuries appear oddly symmetrical, almost as if he — oh I don’t know — left his feet in a bucket full of dry ice. So they report the case to authorities. But still they amputate his legs below the knees, because he genuinely needs it. Except the big insurance payout he and his friend are hoping for never materializes. Because the police search their place and find the plastic bucket, insurance documents, a white polystyrene box for dry ice, eight mobile phones, and a tablet computer. Then they discover what they say is the real motive for the scheme. Right, allegedly Liao lost a big chunk of change trading cryptocurrency. So somehow he tricked Zhang into signing a legal note obligating him to pay about 800,000 dollars after he got the insurance payout. But obviously that didn’t happen, and now they’ve been charged with fraud and aiding and abetting serious injury.
