actually it was a series of bronze mirrors set in a line. each mirror could be pointed by an individual at a single target. when all mirrors were focused on a single target, it burned.

Round frame is better results. Also depending on how deep the frame is you can use vacuum level to focus/refocus light pinpoint at different distances, sorta like a laser focusing effect.
