Brief Biographies of the 84 Mahasiddhas: PACARI 59 - PACARI WAS A POOR MAN who sold a baker’s pastries on the street, giving the money to the baker. One day he ate half the pastries and gave the other half to Avalokiteśvara, who appeared in the guise of a monk. The monk caused him to take refuge and gave him instructions in the recitation of OṂ MAṆI PADME HŪṂ. Through the recitation, he quickly attained siddhi. When the baker confronted him and asked for his money, Pacari said that he and the monk had eaten the pastries. The baker beat him, causing Pacari to complain that he was taking the full beating for having eaten half the pastries. A voice came from a wall confirming that this was true. Pacari later repaid the baker and set off for Potalaka, the mountain abode of Avalokiteśvara. When he stepped on a thorn and recited the mantra, Avalokiteśvara appeared before him and told him to return and work for the benefit of sentient beings. Pacari rose into the sky and flew back to his homeland, where he gave instructions on the union of emptiness and appearance. DESCRIPTION OF THE PAINTING Dark-skinned Pacari sits on a jackal skin under a tree, a jug and skull cup on either side. He wears a red dhoti. His hair is cut short; he wears a gold necklace and earring. He strikes a casual pose, with his right hand resting on the ground, his left elbow on his left knee. In his left hand he holds one of his pastries, which he is about to eat. On the right stands the bodhisattva Avalokiteśvara in the guise of a monk; he appears to have a small crown protrusion (uṣṇīṣa).
