In the years before the U.S. entered World War II, it was the boldest of the few Hollywood films to deal with events in Europe. Some of Chaplin's associates tried to talk him out of this final speech about peace. Film history nerd here- this was one of (if not THE) first time most audiences had ever heard Charlie Chaplin's voice in a movie. He chose to do it because he hoped that it would resonate more.
