The Czechoslovak mobilization of 1938 In 1938, Czechoslovakia faced a serious threat from Nazi Germany, led by Adolf Hitler. Hitler demanded that Czechoslovakia give up its border regions, known as the Sudetenland, where many Germans lived. The Czechoslovak government therefore began preparing the army for a possible war. The first partial mobilization was announced on May 20, 1938. It was caused by fears of a German attack. Tens of thousands of men joined the army and Czechoslovak soldiers took up defensive positions. After the situation temporarily calmed down, the soldiers were released back into the reserves. During the summer, tensions increased again. Hitler continued demanding the Sudetenland and the threat of war became more serious. On September 23, 1938, Czechoslovakia announced general mobilization. Around 1.1 million men were called into the army to defend the country. The Czechoslovak army occupied defensive positions and border fortifications. The soldiers were ready to fight. Czechoslovakia had a well-trained army, modern weapons and a large system of fortifications. However, some fortifications were still unfinished and Czechoslovakia was becoming diplomatically isolated. In the end, war did not happen in September 1938. On September 29–30, Germany, Italy, Britain and France signed the Munich Agreement. Czechoslovakia was forced to give its border territories to Germany. The Czechoslovak government accepted the agreement and the army had to withdraw from the border fortifications. The mobilization of 1938 therefore ended without a direct war with Germany. Many Czechoslovak soldiers and civilians were deeply disappointed because the army had been prepared to fight. However, Czechoslovakia was forced to give up its border regions without a war.
