@wearedigitaldiplomacy: Has Elon Musk crossed the line? Well, hard to say… This time Musk is not only clashing with OpenAI CEO and co-founder Sam Altman, he’s also publicly attacking the $500 billion Stargate artificial intelligence infrastructure project touted by US President Donald Trump. “They don’t actually have the money,” Musk — who was not at the White House press conference — commented on X about OpenAI, Oracle, and SoftBank, the three tech companies that joined Trump for the Stargate project. “SoftBank has well under $10B secured. I have that on good authority,” Musk added. Altman responded: “Wrong, as you surely know. This is great for the country. I realize what is great for the country isn’t always what’s optimal for your companies, but in your new role I hope you’ll mostly put America first.” It is the latest in a feud between the two tech billionaires that started on OpenAI’s board and is now testing Musk’s influence with the new president. That’s a lot of drama for a feel-good photo op. Clearly — some suggest — there seems to be more is at stake than just a few minutes onstage with the new president. The new AI entity, Stargate, is already starting to build out data centers and the electricity generation needed for the further development of fast-evolving AI technology. Altman told Musk: “Want to come visit the first site already under way?” Trump declared Stargate “a resounding declaration of confidence in America’s potential” under his new administration, with an initial private investment of $100 billion that could reach five times that sum. But Musk, a close Trump adviser and a co-founder of OpenAI, is questioning the value of the investment and is doubling down on Sam Altman, just hours after Trump’s White House announcement. Musk has not stopped there and — after re-posting on X a post by Altman from 2021 against Trump — he posted: “Altman literally testified to Congress that he wouldn’t get OpenAI compensation and now he wants $10 billion! What a liar.” Musk was referring to the fact that OpenAI, last year, became a for profit company from being a not for profit, and Altman reportedly got a 7% stake. #digitaldiplomacy #diplomacy
