Claude’s watermarking has been all over my feed this week, but I think the internet needs a simple explanation of how this works. So here it is. Anthropic, the company behind Claude, recently implemented a new watermarking feature into all of their models, which makes any text generated by their models detectable as AI-generated. This watermark doesn't just place some metadata into your text, which could be easily deleted. The watermark is the text. The model places unique patterns into long strings of text, into long outputs of text, which, while technically possible for a human to write, would be highly unlikely. Now Anthropic haven't released exactly what these patterns would be but the concept isthe same as how I've explained it in this video.
