This aria was written for a spoken play, not for an opera. 🎭 King Arthur was what the English called a semi-opera: a play with long spoken stretches where the music entered in isolated scenes, like set pieces of stagecraft. The frost scene was one of them. Henry Purcell, organist of the royal court and of Westminster Abbey, composed it on a text by the playwright John Dryden, and the production became his greatest success in the theatre. Purcell did not live to repeat it: he died four years later, before turning forty, during a London winter, of a fever his widow could never quite explain. ✨ The frost scene nearly vanished along with the rest of the English baroque repertory. The one who brought it back to the world, centuries later, was an unlikely name: Klaus Nomi, a German singer from the New York pop scene, who in 1981 recorded this same aria for a high male voice and made it the centerpiece of his androgynous stage act. Nomi died of AIDS two years later, and the recording came to be seen as the farewell of an artist who knew he was leaving. The aria about a creature begging to die thus gained a second life outside the opera house. 🎤 The singer here is Jakub Józef Orliński, a Pole born in Warsaw, the son of painters. He studied baroque singing in his home city and later at Juilliard, with a master's thesis on early ornamentation. He also practices capoeira and skateboarding, and first sang this aria at a major Swiss festival, with piano.
