The price of firewood has gone up 60% over the last few years, and this is one reason why your BBQ is more expensive. This creates a massive opportunity for you. Here's a business idea that you can pull off that's not what you think: My friend's roommate started EcoScraps, a GENIUS concept. Grocery stores would PAY THEM to take old produce. They'd mix in some sawdust, compost it, bag it, & sell it by the pallet to Home Depot as premium soil. Scott's Miracle-Gro bought them out. Cool, but what about firewood? I own a tree trimming biz and we pay to dump our limbs. We'd also PAY for someone to take them. This is called negative COGS - cost of goods sold. You get the product for less than free, and I'm obsessed with the concept. But then what? Not that easy, right? Correct. Because the wood has to be seasoned, AKA dried, before it can be sold as either firewood or BBQ wood. That takes months or a very expensive kiln. Until now! Now there's affordable, portable kilns that attach to 20' shipping containers. Here's how the process would go: You'd text every tree trimmer in your area and say

(And charge later on) You'd collect, split and dry the wood, and then sell it to restaurants, distributors or homeowners. Can you do this with all types of wood? For BBQ no, you want hardwoods like oak or hickory. For firewood, almost all, but not quite. You can mulch or trash the rest. Sell the mulch. Sell the really big hardwoods to woodworkers to make bowls or resin tables. You'd need to invest some cash and have a little land. Lots of caveats to this biz. The easiest part will be acquiring your materials for free. The harder part will be the operations and the sales. Choose your hard. But prices are through the roof right now.
