We have been doing this the last 5 years! We live in alaska so watering in the winters suck. This year we went different route and got a heated hose we keep hooked up an its been working good! We got down to -15 at night for a little an it still did good! Some parts in it froze but all we had to do was bend the hose in that area an it started flowing again!

We tried those and we just couldn't get them to hold up. But we have a lot of water areas to get to. They are worth trying. We went back to buying heavy duty hoses(commercial) and draining them.

I’ve been asking for YEARS why barns don’t use expandable hoses

I did that this year also and love it. Also added a frostless hydrant for filling and watering post in pasture.

It only works when the trough is really close, but just a really short hose to un hook, drain, and hang on the spigot 🤌🏼 it gets stiff but not frozen if drained, but it is right next to the trough

I'm in N. TX so not as cold as Montana but I'm thinking next winter to try out a firehose and getting a hose reel so it squeezes out the water. My flex hose still froze and I spent an hr to defrost 1/
