![What does it mean to belong? To carry the weight of a name, a village, a memory etched in the marrow of your bones, and yet feel untethered, like a wandering ghost? Romania, too, wanders—fractured into two worlds, two selves. One is the Romania of steadfast soil and golden hayfields, where life moves to the rhythm of church bells and the crackle of wood in a hearth. The other is a Romania of shimmering façades, a hollow pursuit of modernity where tradition is a relic, mocked or forgotten. And then there is the third Romania—the one scattered across oceans and continents. A diaspora, carrying pieces of home like shards of broken mirrors, always reflecting but never whole. The village Romania whispers of roots—roots you can taste in the bread baked on wood fires, roots you can hear in the wail of a doina carried by the wind. Yet it is a place often scorned by its own children, some of whom flee to cities, their laughter tinged with pity for those who stayed. Others leave for foreign shores, lured by the mirage of better lives. Some find them, yes—gleaming kitchens and sleek cars. But more often, they toil in silence, faceless and invisible, scraping a living in the kitchens, fields, and factories of a world that calls them strangers. But moving forward does not mean forgetting; embracing new comforts is not an excuse to deride the old. What is the worth of a better life if it rests on mockery of your roots, the very essence of who you are? What have we lost, and what have we gained in this tearing apart? Can the Romania of patience and the Romania of pretense ever speak to each other again? Can the diaspora, aching for home yet alienated by its own land, ever find peace? It is a question of pride and shame, of forgetting and remembering. Do we dare imagine a unity born not of nostalgia, but of love—a fierce, honest love that holds both joy and sorrow?
