I really thought this would be my comeback post. I thought a year would feel like a finish line. That I would look back at everything I survived, feel proud of how far I’d come, and today would somehow feel victorious. I didn’t expect it to hurt this much. My emotions have been all over the place today. One minute I look around at my life and feel overwhelmingly grateful. The next, I’m grieving everything that changed in a matter of seconds. I don’t know whether I want to celebrate, cry, be surrounded by people, or be completely alone. Maybe that’s healing too. Maybe healing isn’t arriving at some point where what happened no longer hurts. Maybe it’s learning that gratitude and grief can exist in the same body at the same time. That you can be incredibly thankful for the life you still have and still mourn the life you thought you were going to have. And to every person who reached out today - thank you. More than you probably realize. There is something incredibly moving about being remembered. About someone knowing this date matters to you without having to remind them. About a simple message that says, in its own way, I remember what happened to you. I remember what you survived. I know today might be hard. I thought by one year I would have all kinds of profound things to say about survival. I don’t. Some days I’m strong. Some days I’m tired. Some days I recognize myself completely, and some days I’m still trying to figure out who I am now. But I’m here. And maybe today doesn’t have to be a comeback. Maybe being here is enough. #recoveryispossible
