I watched this exchange in the Dewan Rakyat today, 11 August 2026, involving YB Mohd Sany Hamzan, MP for Hulu Langat, and YAB Dato’ Seri Amirudin Shari, MP for Gombak and Menteri Besar Selangor. Sany said: “Tak apa! Ambillah lagi! Curilah lagi! Rompaklah lagi! Yang penting Melayu dan juga Islam!” Taken literally, it sounds outrageous. But I don’t believe it was meant literally. It was sarcasm, deliberately uncomfortable and thought-provoking. Sany appears to be turning the logic of racial and religious double standards upside down. Imagine a Malaysia where wrongdoing is excused simply because the person committing it belongs to a particular race or religion. If a Malay steals public money, is it less wrong because he is Malay? If a Muslim steals, is it less wrong because he is Muslim? If a Chinese or Indian Malaysian steals, should an entire community be blamed? Of course not. A crime does not inherit the identity of the person who commits it. Public money belongs to the rakyat, not to any race or religion. And that leads to the uncomfortable question: Do we sometimes judge identity first, and wrongdoing second? When corruption becomes a racial issue, integrity gets lost. When wrongdoing becomes a religious issue, accountability gets lost. When everything becomes partisan, we stop asking the simplest question: Was the conduct right or wrong? For me, the standard is simple: Judge the act. Examine the evidence. Apply the law. Hold the individual accountable. Not the race. Not the religion. Not the political party. Not the community. No one should receive a discount on accountability because of identity. Equally, no community should carry the shame of an individual’s wrongdoing. That is what leadership should mean. “If they are wrong, they are wrong.” Even when they belong to our own political party, community or religion. The real test of integrity is not whether we demand justice when the accused is someone we dislike. It is whether we demand the same justice when the accused is someone we identify with. That is why I would not dismiss Sany’s words as another political soundbite. The sarcasm may be uncomfortable. But perhaps that is precisely the point. Would we still demand accountability if the person accused was Malay, Chinese, Indian, Muslim, non-Muslim, government, opposition, or simply someone we support? If the answer is yes, regardless of who they are, then we understand equality before the law. Malaysia does not need more people defending wrongdoing because of identity. We need more people defending principles: Integrity over identity. Accountability over allegiance. Justice over double standards.
