Here is one my twins around 2.5 years of age having a night terror. Kacey went through a period for about 3-4 months where he would have night terrors almost every night. Night terrors are common in toddlers aged 2.5-4 years and usually occur when they are going through major brain development, are overtired or sick. Night terrors usually happen about 2–3 hours after bed time and is when the brain is in non-REM (deep sleep) stages of sleep. Children have a brief wake up when moving into the next sleep cycle and the area of the brain that controls this becomes over excited. This is what makes your child feel scared, panicked and terrified. Night terrors can be distressing to see but the thing to remember is - they have absolutely no idea they are doing this! So how did I know this was a night terror and not a nightmare?? 🔴 It was the same time every night (roughly 2-3 hours after bedtime). 🔴 If we tired to comfort him he wouldn’t allow us to and was not responsive. 🔴 He wouldn’t speak. 🔴 He seemed awake but very confused. 🔴 He was thrashing around. 🔴 Sometimes these would only last 30-40 seconds, other times it was minutes. So what do you do if your child is having a night terror? ✅ Make sure there environment is safe ✅ Sit quietly in the room to make sure they don’t hurt themselves. ✅ Wait patiently for the eppisode to run its course. 🚫 Important 🚫 Don’t try to wake your child up when having a night terror. This won’t work, when children are woken up from a night terror they are likely to be more confused, scared and upset. It can also take longer for them to settle down and go back to sleep. And last but not least, don’t try talk to your child about it the next day because they won’t have any recollection of the night terror. . . . . . #sleepingbeauties #sleepconsultant #nightterrors #sleepterrors #sleepscience #nonremsleep #deepsleep #toddlersleep #childrensleeping #sleeptraining #bedtime #overnight
