as a local, just get a suica, you can get welcome ones at the airport and use them on any train line and anywhere around Japan. the metro pass only covers 2 lines which aren't even very good. also, accommodation along the yamanote is probably gonna be more expensive, just look for somewhere with 5 minutes of a station and you'll be able to get where you're going - Tokyo is very well connected thru trains.

Re the Tokyo subway pass - if you want to save more $$$ and don't mind the hassle, download Japan travel app to filter routes that the subway pass covers - it is possible to get around (albeit a bit more of a hassle) However if you're staying for a longer periods of time suica or any Japan ic card might be a better choice to get access to the jr lines - I have a video on suica/PASMO alternatives "search suica PASMO alternatives" on YouTube or google to find it ❤️❤️❤️

There is free WiFi everywhere eg stations and buss stops. If you have Revolut on your phone, their eSIM is quite good value for mobile data
