@mira_is_psyched: Replying to @Roland P. If not democracy, why democracy-shaped?! Let’s talk about Germany‘s voting and party system. #germany #german #germany🇩🇪 #germanytiktok #deutschland #deutschlandtiktok #deutschlandtiktok🇩🇪 #europe #europetiktok #voting #democracy #2025 #news #european
"Sorry, big, big words" 😂 hopefully Roland was able to understand all of that because it was super interesting! I wish we had that system in the US!

Roland will definitely not understand that. Opening a can of Mountain Dew is more likely to be his success of the day.

MMP works for Aotearoa NZ as well - although we dont vote for a chancellor or president. The PM is generally the leader of the larger party in coalition.

There’s also a loophole around the 5% rule. If you get enough „direkt mandate“ meaning you win enough first votes, you are part of the parliament even ifyou would fail the 5% threshold

5% needed is way too high. It blocks small parties.

I'm curious, how are parties formed and who decides if a person/candidate is in their party?

That's the system we have in the Scottish Parliament. We have two votes, one for an individual aligned to a party for local constituency and the second for a party in the region to balance it off.

How are the winning local district representatives “seated” with respect to your second vote for party? Isn’t there a fixed number of seats, i.e. on for each local district?

Ireland is the same with have PR STV (PR Single Transferable Vote). We haven’t had a single party government since the 1970s. Collation government is the best.

Do you cast only one vote for party or in preference order. They have something similar is Australia and seemed to end up with very small groups having too much power as they had deciding vote.
