Reviving a Shattered New Smartphone: Motherboard Repair After a Balcony Drop Today, we received a recently released smartphone sent by a fan in dire need of repair. The device was severely damaged - the back cover shattered to pieces, and the body was noticeably bent. The fan mentioned that he had purchased the phone just a few days ago. While testing the impressive camera capabilities from his second-floor balcony at home - boasting over 100 million pixels and 120x zoom - he became so engrossed that he accidentally dropped the phone. The allure of summer scenery can be captivating, but unfortunately, this led to a costly mishap. After taking the damaged phone to the official service center, he was informed that both the motherboard and back cover needed replacement, totaling over 3,000 yuan. Hoping to save some money, he reached out to us to see if we could repair the motherboard. Upon disassembling the phone, we conducted a power meter test and discovered that the motherboard was leaking 200 milliamps. Further inspection revealed that the massive rear camera module occupied two-thirds of the motherboard space - it's practically a camera with calling capabilities! Similar to the iPhone 16, this phone features a dual-layer motherboard design. However, the motherboard was visibly deformed from the fall. Testing the motherboard separately still showed the 200 milliamp leak. A current leak typically indicates that some components are overheating. We removed all the shielding stickers and soldered a tin wire to the positive terminal of the motherboard. Using a thermal imager, we identified a heating chip - the charging IC. Before removing the charging IC, we tested nearby capacitors and found their resistance values were 0002, indicating they were nearly short-circuited but not entirely. After removing the charging IC, the resistance remained the same, suggesting another faulty component on the circuit. Without schematics for this new model, we analyzed the chip structure and layout manually. We removed the large inductor next to the charging IC, which connects to the motherboard's secondary main power supply. Testing confirmed that the short was in the secondary power supply. Most secondary chips are located beneath the dual-layer motherboard, so we used a hot air gun to separate the layers. Upon careful observation, we discovered that the power IC had a visible crack from the impact. We removed the damaged power IC, cleaned the solder pads, and installed a new one. Retesting showed normal resistance values, and the motherboard no longer leaked current. After reassembling the components and soldering the motherboard layers back together, we placed the motherboard back into the casing. The battery was depleted, so we activated it. Once all flex cables were connected, we powered on the device - the logo appeared, and it successfully booted into the system. We reinstalled the camera and tested all functionalities; everything worked perfectly. Finally, we applied thermal grease to the CPU and reassembled the phone. Unfortunately, due to the phone's recent release, replacement back covers are not yet available on the market. We'll advise the fan to visit the official service center for the back cover replacement. Mission accomplished! Your phone is repaired.
