@packleaderdogs: We don’t realize how quickly we start to confuse a puppy when we treat them like humans by engaging with them primarily through the eyes and ears. A puppy is born with her nose open, but eyes and ears closed. They navigate the world for the first two weeks of their life by just their nose. It’s a dogs unique way of perceiving the world. I always try to find as many ways to engage a puppy’s nose as possible. Using their nose allows them to be themselves, builds confidence, and allows them to fulfill a very important instinct. I also know that many humans have engaged with their puppies through eyes and ears due to a lack of knowledge of Dog Psychology. Doing scent games and engaging the nose in training are great ways to keep a puppy primarily using their nose but can also be done with an adult dog if we missed puppyhood. When we don’t engage the nose in puppyhood, a puppy will start being conditioned to use more eyes and ears because that’s how the humans around the puppy are communicating with them. Removing the nose can cause a puppy to lose confidence and be confused. Humans are primarily eyes 👀 and ears👂 Imagine someone blindfolding you, and then you have to navigate the world. Would be frustrating, confusing, and scary at times. That’s what it’s like for a dog to not use their nose. If you missed engaging the nose in puppyhood, you can absolutely begin engaging the nose as an adult. It may take some time if the dog is conditioned through eyes and ears, but eventually, a dogs instincts will kick back in and get that nose going again. As always, be sure to practice patience when working with your dog or puppy. Does your dog use their nose or do the primarily use eyes & ears?
