In recognition of black history month, there is no hair-story to share than Angela Davis’, an 81 year-old living legend who in the early 70’s was prosecuted on 3 capital felony counts, one being conspiracy to murder. During her year long trial she showed up to court wearing a huge Afro at a time when the Afro hairstyle represented militancy, unlawful acts, and defiance in the eyes of the same system she was fighting for her life against. In modern day times black men and women still feel the need to have laws passed to protect them against texture discrimination in the workplace. More often than not, this causes many black women to succumb to assimilation for acceptance, to a beauty standard rooted in European standards of beauty. Before I started my business I recall at one point feeling compelled to straighten my hair for job interviews, not because I’d ever been told to by an employer but because I personally didn’t have the confidence to show up unapologetic in my desire to wear a natural hair style. I was lead like so many other black women in corporate settings, to assume I wouldn’t be hired instead of trying it first and seeing if my work ethic and skills would be the focus. Looking back we can all be inspired by the way Angela Davis showed up courageous and confident taking the focus off of her hair and forcing her opponent to recognize the brilliance of her mind that ultimately lead to her freedom. So the next time you feel the need to alter your natural hair texture in hopes to get further in 2024, think of the legendary Ms. Angela Davis and remember her freedom was in her authenticity in 1972. 🇺🇸✊🏾🤜🏾🤛🏾 If you’re struggling with wanting to wear your real hair to work but lack the confidence and instead wear hair styles that are damaging and causing you to lose your edges be sure to visit my website amberfrank.us to attend my Free LIVE Masterclass this Thursday 2/15 at 7om CST!! Get your questions answered to uncover the roots of why some of us choose to assimilate and how to embrace our hair unapologetically. #blackhistory #americanhistory #afro #angeladavis #hairstory #13thdocumentary #afrankedu🌱
