well that's kind of a good idea but if you would just use the sheetrock paper just a little bit bigger you would have had to just use that not the tape

I usually cut the drywall and leave flaps on all sides. then put it in and use the mud to hold flaps into place.

Also as someone hanging a lot of drywall right now they make a drill bit that puts the screws at the perfect depth for people afraid to go too far

Use 45 set on the first two coats, and then a finished joint compound for the final few coats. You won't have to wait a day for it to dry until the final coat.

chamfering the edges of the repair actually bonds the new board with the old board and you don't need tape.
