Had to share this moment when the women of the village I spent the day in near Muzaffarpur, Bihar surprised me with their baby goats under this huge basket! Women statistically face more barriers when it comes to gaining access to the skills and equipment needed to successfully raise livestock, and Project Mesha is specifically designed to solve this problem. The Pashu Sakhi project focuses on improvements in a few key areas, like deworming and vaccinations, breeding controls to improve the health of the Black Bengal breed, access to equipment for fair pricing, and even self-defense training. They’ve connected women to the supply chain to get what they need medically, and have training modules on everything from sterile best practices during vaccinations to how to build shelters for their herds. The women have been given scales and harnesses so that their goats can be weigh accurately before they’re priced for sale, a special kind of nutrient-rich algae that grows well and is great for goat health, and how to cultivate a garden in which the root vegetables can feed them and their families, but the leaves can feed their goats. Every Pashu Sakhi is given a tablet to record her daily activities, and the data they’ve collected is simply inspiring. The goat mortality rate has gone from more than half to less than 20%, and they currently support over 23,000 households and are on track to support 50,000. The economic benefits are so clear in the data, but the confidence and autonomy in a group of women, who previously didn’t have access to either, is part of the project that impacted me the most. Changing the way the women raise their goats has a direct and clear financial benefit, but the culture change it creates in the role women can play in their families and communities is just as significant. #india #goats #bihar
