@czech.it: Renting a car in Zanzibar?🇹🇿 I haven't found much info on this topic and when asked directly travellers some people were very hesitant to talk about this, so here we go! Avoid these common mistakes to stay safe and save money! 🚗 1️⃣ Always rent from an established international company for reliability and safety. We chose a local company as it was a little bit cheaper and not only the car was in quite bad condition, we found out that the spare tire was punctured, this is something you definitely wanna check cause there are many “roads” that are really not roads leading to hotels, beaches etc. 2️⃣ Stick to the speed limit – Zanzibar’s roads can be tricky and speed limit is everywhere between 50-80 kmh and they very strict about cause you guessed it right…. Chance for bribes! 3️⃣ Be prepared for frequent police stops – corruption is super common. You need to have a local license from your rental company and have it handy, as soon as they see the car is rental, they will stop you. We were stopped 11x. 4️⃣ Carry two wallets: one with small change and another with a bit more. If stopped and facing the fine, police will ask you for bribe, offer the small change to avoid a large amount and show them you don't have more on you!
