#creatorsearchinsights Loans have become part of my life, and they’re destroying me. How do I stop borrowing? A follower asked me this question, and I know many business owners can relate. Borrowing isn’t always the problem. The real problem is when loans become the only way your business survives. Here’s how to break the cycle: 1. Find out why you’re borrowing. Ask yourself: Why do I keep taking loans? Example: If you borrow every month to restock, it could mean your prices are too low, your profits are too small, or customers take too long to pay. If you borrow to pay school fees, then the business is carrying personal responsibilities it wasn’t prepared for. 2. Separate business money from personal money. Your business is not your ATM. Example: If your business makes UGX 500,000 profit, don’t keep withdrawing money whenever you want to buy clothes, send money to relatives, or attend functions. Instead, pay yourself a fixed amount, for example UGX 150,000, and leave the rest in the business. 3. Build a business emergency fund. Save money specifically for unexpected situations. Example: If your fridge breaks down, your landlord increases rent, or sales drop for two months, you shouldn’t have to run for a loan. Start by saving even UGX 10,000 or UGX 20,000 weekly until you build at least 3–6 months’ worth of business expenses. 4. Cut unnecessary expenses. Review your spending honestly. Example: Do you really need daily takeaways, expensive packaging, or transport costs that can be reduced? Saving UGX 5,000 daily can give you over UGX 150,000 in a month. 5. Create a sinking fund for predictable expenses. Some expenses are not emergencies because you already know they’re coming. Example: If your trading license costs UGX 120,000 annually, save UGX 10,000 every month instead of borrowing when renewal time comes. Do the same for rent, taxes, and school fees. 6. Stop borrowing to maintain a lifestyle. Don’t use loans to impress people. Example: Taking a loan to buy a new phone, host a big celebration, or keep up appearances while your business is struggling will only increase financial pressure. 7. Make a debt repayment plan. Face your loans instead of avoiding them. Example: List all your loans from the smallest to the largest or by interest rate. If you have loans of UGX 100,000, UGX 300,000, and UGX 800,000, focus extra payments on one while paying the minimum on the others until each is cleared. Remember: A loan should help your business grow, not keep it alive. The goal isn’t to never borrow again. The goal is to build a business strong enough that borrowing becomes a choice, not a necessity. #FinancialLiteracy #SmallBusinessTips #fyp
