This is addirional to the standard maroon stripes adjacent to the Gold/Silver ones. He was more than an Engineer and the FE's technical and operational knowledge many times surpassed the forward facing crew, especially when new to the job. I make a distinction here between a " Professional Flight Engineer" and say what the Americans referred to as a "Second Officer" who is a mere Technical Pilot operating the panel sat behind the First Officer. When crap hots the fan you realise the importance of the FE in the frequency of interaction with the Captain in babaging the abnormalities. The FP quietly slides to the role of steering the plane and staying on the radios while the Emergency show is Orchestrated from the left seat conducting the music with his First Violinist...the glorious Flight Engineer. Ofcourse there is Al these days in the form of ECAM and EICAS to assist the Captain and his FO and soon the Al will even take over the role of relief pilot on long cruises as the A350 is about to be certified for this I recently discovered
