These mushrooms are beautiful and velvety! . This fungus is a polypore called “turkey tail” (Trametes versicolor). This fungus is saprophytic, or what it is the same, it decomposes dead matter, specifically dead wood. . When these mushrooms stack on top of each other, they form amazingly beautiful regular patterns. Interestingly, when they get wet, their coloration sharpens and they become even more beautiful. This is due to the little hair-like structures that cover the top of the mushroom. This velvety top of the mushroom retains humidity and when they get wet, their colors brighten! . I imagine these hairs are modified hyphae that help the mushroom maintain a good level of humidity. If you are a mycologist and know more about these hairs, I would love you to write a comment with information about these structures. . Anyhow, these hairs under the microscope are very pretty and they form a velvety structure that makes the mushroom feel incredibly fuzzy to the touch! . Remember, mushrooms are just the part of fungi that we see emerging above ground or from dead wood. But underground (or in the wood, like in this reel) is the part of the fungus that we don’t see. This other part of the fungus forms a huge network of cell filaments (hyphae) that extends everywhere in the soil, or in the decomposing wood… (the hyphae network is called mycelium). . One more thing: don’t underestimate the ecological importance of fungi! Just because most of the time we don’t see them, it doesn’t mean they are not all around us. In this case, it is fungi like the ones in the video that make dead trees decompose. This will recycle nutrients into the forest and will keep the ecosystem healthy. .
