Coined by lesbian feminist Adrienne Rich in the 1980s, comphet, short for compulsive heterosexuality, is the idea that women are automatically assumed to be straight and pressured into heterosexuality by a patriarchal, heteronormative society. This can often take the form of feeling like you should date men, even when you’re not truly attracted to them. Pretending to crush on male celebrities. Ignoring or suppressing any queer feelings, and even dressing and acting in line with heteronormative expectations. For many queer women, unpacking comphet is a huge part of their coming out journey. Queer women are often forced to wrestle with their true selves, and questioning these norms can feel overwhelming. Comphet became a buzzword thanks to the rising popularity of the Lesbian Master Doc. Originally created by Tumblr user Anjeli Luz in 2018. Even celebrities have turned to the legendary Lesbian Master Doc for guidance. Last year, singer and Mean Girls star Renéé Rapp revealed in an interview that her last Google search was for the document. And 2023, Kehlani shared that the fabled doc helped her understand her sexuality before she publicly came out as a lesbian. The 30-page document was designed as a supportive guide for those questioning their sexuality. It offers a list of signs and yes/no statements to help people figure out if they might be a lesbian.
