this is probably too niche for tiktok but whatever Thomas Mangelsen is a wildlife photographer and conservationist who’s been photographed a grizzly bear known as Grizzly 399 in Grand Teton National Park for 18 years. A staunch advocate for wildlife conservation and especially the protection of grizzlies everywhere, Mangelsen’s work has largely influenced the public attention to grizzlies and how we treat them. One could say that his influence has done so much that it has helped keep grizzlies on the endangered species list when hunting and ranching lobby groups worked to get them delisted to be hunted and killed. On Oct. 22, 2024, Grizzly 399 was fatally struck by a vehicle on a highway. Grizzly 399 was 28 years old, and had a total of 18 cubs over her lifetime. Only eight of 399’s cubs have reached adulthood, the others all being killed due to man. Mangelsen talks about his experience photographing Grizzly 399 as “magical” and has said that she has reinforced his view that all animals have emotions and are sentient beings. He says she was a gentle and loving mother. When one of her cubs got hit and killed by a car she gently picked up its body and laid it next to a fallen spruce tree on the side of the road. She spent the rest of the night running up and down to road - beside herself with grief. The full documentary is called 399: Queen of the Tetons and follows Grizzly 399, Thomas Mangelsen, and many other bear/nature experts as she attempts to raise her four cubs in the national park. Currently finishing up showing at film festivals, a shorter version aired on PBS Nature and can be watched on Amazon prime. I had the pleasure of watching it on a Delta Airlines flight and I highly recommend you to look for the full version when it comes out! #bear #sidelines #phoebebridgers #grizzly399 #grandtetons
