En fait, l’effet de sol est souvent plus stable au-dessus de l’eau qu’au-dessus d’un terrain accidenté, ce qui explique pourquoi certains oiseaux marins, comme les pélicans, l’utilisent instinctivement pour parcourir de longues distances en planant juste au-dessus de la surface. Ce phénomène permet au pélican d’économiser un maximum d’énergie en exploitant les lois de l’aérodynamique.
