@nbcwashington: In a White House press conference on Thursday, the Secretary of Defense discussed an "elevation issue" that may have contributed to the Potomac crash. But what does that mean? The NTSB is the only agency authorized to release information about the cause of this tragic crash. But News4's Ted Oberg broke down what the elevation issue might have been. #potomaccrash #potomacplanecrash #dca #ronaldreagannationalairport #airport #militaryhelicopter #helicopter #passengerjet #plane #crash #tragedy #potomacriver #dc #washingtondc #ntsb #defensesecretary #elevationissue #firstresponders #arlington #virginia #nova #northernvirginia #dmv #dmvnews #md #maryland

Why didn’t the tower just tell the helicopter to not go into the path of the landing airplane?

Sorry but WHY would anyone think having any aircraft fly underneath a plane on final making a landing is a good idea there is no logic in that at all

Low altitude, high altitude? That helo should not have been in that path regardless. Even a close call could’ve grounded that helo from the turbulence

closer to the end of the runway, the altitude is no longer 200 ft. It's only 200 ft on the corridor. If the pilot moved away from the corridor, even if he was flying 200 ft, it's too high.

What astounds me, is this is normal operations, apparently.

Not for nothing, but is 100ft really enough of a buffer?

Why can’t these military helicopters pilots take their certifications in more remote places?

If they didn’t see the plane on approach, but saw another CRJ and to follow behind, then that may have caused them to veer off the normal path

Why wouldn’t they have cockpit voice and any other device that would provide details. Especially since they are operating in side US amongst commercial aircraft. This is ridiculous.

What the newsies are getting wrong, is that modern Army Helicopter fleet do have the cockpit flightcrew voice recorders capability; it call IVHMS and it the Army version of the aurcraft Blackbox.

Did the helicopter have contact with the controller? To my understanding there was only 1 controller.

The helo veered to get away from the other CRJ in the video to go behind it, they never saw the plane they struck

Doesn’t the plane have to be at ground level to land? I’m so confused

Elevation should not be the concern .Flight path is critical at any elevation. The plane can't land at 300 ft.

consistent with misidentifying the aircraft taking off with the one they were to fly behind

This was not an accident, this was premeditated. I refuse to believe that a MILITARY chopper DIDNT SEE OR COMMUNICATE with the passenger plane. There's no way the chopper didn't see the plane

Anyone questioning the planes pilot or height are incorrect in doing so. He was compliant with all regulations and landing approach procedures. The helicopter pilot is the one that should be under scrutiny and investigation. You only need to watch the footage to see it stays in the planes path for a long period as if to chase it. How you dont see a passenger plane full of lights in the dark is unfathomable.
