I cannot with “trad wife” influencers encouraging women (and even their daughters!!) to financially depend on men. @moneywithkatie posted a reel last week breaking down the hypocrisy of a trad wife influencer (who makes a living being a trad wife influencer) telling her daughter that the number one career she should strive for is a home maker. Now— before I get into this rant, I am NOT taking a jab at stay at home moms or people who do decide to stay home. That’s a deeply personal decision and there are ways to do it that ensure you do stay safe, if the marriage ever ends or something happens. But we have to talk about the dangers of giving up financial independence and encouraging others to do the same through a trend romanticizing subservience. Money is safety, security, freedom— your ability to leave a bad marriage/relationship/situation requires money. The CDC reports 1 in 3 women experience domestic violence in their lifetime and in those cases? Between 92-99% also experienced financial abuse. Putting ourselves in a position where we are financially dependent on someone when the risk of DV and financial abuse is already so high— is not something to try and actively promote or encourage children to pursue. Women have had to fight tooth and nail to get: -equitable wages (and there’s still a gap) -access to credit -the ability to own property -access to and the ability to get a divorce And although we have made strides the inequities still exist and the cards are often stacked against women, even when they DO have financial independence. Consider this: -after divorce women are 3x more likely to end up in poverty -women’s earnings peak at 44 whereas men’s earnings keep climbing until their 50s -due to the pay gap, women on average lose almost a million dollars in wealth over the lifetime of their careers -and mothers earn $0.58 for every $1 earned by fathers Financial independence is SO important. It creates more security— both for you and your family. It makes leaving a bad situation possible. It provides autonomy, freedom, and options. I want that for everyone.
