If it makes you feel better grits up north here get a lot of hate and some people don’t know what grits are. Some people add sugar whereas the normal southern way is salt pepper and cheese 🤷🏻♂️

Grits is defined by the grain/meal used in each country. Historically, grits in UK would be unmilled grain (oatmeal) or stewed berries (not puréed) in Denmark = Grød 🥰

Florbchuk :
Grits is just ground hominy so it’s a form of cornmeal, polenta is also a form of cornmeal so you are right, basically the same thing as grits. I’m sure that you have cornmeal in England.

Polenta is a funny one in the U.K. in that it’s both widely available and also not very popular, so it’s in supermarkets and on menus but IME loads of people don’t know what it is

My Italian grandmother used to make polenta all the time. Polenta has a coarse texture, grits are creamy. Polenta was served in my house topped with tomato sauce and grated cheese

We do have Grits in the UK but it’s called Maizemeal. Cornmeal is the yellow one (Polenta) and Maizemeal is the white one (Grits).

Porridge is made from ground oats and grits are made from a type of corn high in starch that is ground. Both can be made in milk or water. Polenta is made from ground yellow corn.

I don’t know the difference in these forms of corn, but polenta is made from flint corn, and grits are made from deny corn. So they’re both basically ground corn, just different varieties of corn.

I live in Minnesota. I had grits at a restaurant when we visited Tennessee. I felt like I was eating eating crushed up egg shells. It was awful.
