@sayitoncedogtraining: How does your dog do with the leave it command? Food that is dropped on the ground, shouldn’t be eaten. We often use our dogs as vacuums, but then panic when they attempt to eat something that is poisonous or dangerous to their health. It’s easier to have an implied rule, food that is dropped is never yours. At the beginning of teaching leave it, you don’t want to have a high criteria. Simply, leave the food and get a reward. As your dog starts to understand the command, add more layers in. When food is dropped, simply leaving the item isn’t good enough to get a reward. Now, you have to leave the item, AND look at me in order to get rewarded. Too many owners expect their dog to be able to practice “leave it” with things they don’t like (other dogs, certain people, etc. but don’t practice enough with the items that their dog does like (food, toys, etc.) How does your dog do with the leave it command?

Are you giving him a higher value treat from your hand or same food on floor?

This is so important!! Sometimes you drop something that’s toxic for dogs and you need them to not eat it immediately
