More clarification on what’s up at @University of Pennsylvania. So the thing is this. The Palestine Writes festival has been going on for a couple of years, to celebrate Palestinian creative endeavors, which is great. Thus year, the festival was hijacked by a bunch of racists, and a significant portion of the speakers are outright antisemites with a clear obsession against the Jewish state. I’m not for cancel culture I don’t want the festival to be canceled, however, this conference is sponsored by university academic departments it’s funded in part by university affiliates. It’s happening on campus and some students are forced to attend it. This festival has Roger Waters as a speaker for crying out loud. What does Roger Waters have to do with Palestinian literature? This entire event is an antisemitic dog whistle. They can’t hide it from the Jewish community. We see it for what this is. Penn Administration might not see what this is but we do. The letter that was put out is not enough. The university should specifically denounce the event for what it is racism condemn the organizers and don’t contribute funds to it or host on campus. The university should also look into how this conference was hijacked by known antisemites, such as Susan Abulawa. And the main problem is that an event like this would not have been tolerated if it would’ve been any other marginalized group. An event like this is only acceptable when it’s specifically targeting the Jewish community again right on the Eve of Yom Kippur. This is a disgrace and should be forcefully rejected. Shana Tovah everyone.
