Replying to @mollybirish2 How does my camera not freeze? Well, it does! I let it ice up and so far after more than a cumulative year in Antarctica, I’ve never had an issue. The worst I’ve had, is a frozen memory card which wiped itself of a time-lapse 😖 Many professional camera bodies and lenses are built so well that they’re able to easily withstand everything Antarctica has to throw at it (at Scott Base anyway). I often leave my cameras outside for the entire night and this is about the worst I’ve seen it. It comes back to life after a few hours of slowly warming up. The after care is the most important thing to make sure it survives. Blowing off as much ice as possible is critical. Wiping off the rest is super important. Pointing the lens down is important to make sure that if the ice melts, it drops away from the electronics. Most importantly, warming the camera up slowly is essential. I put this in our cold porch which is set at about 1°c. It’s enough for the ice to disappear but not so warm that it condenses. Condensation is bad. Thankfully, all 7 of the cameras I have brought to Scott Base are still working exceptionally well. #antarctica #camera #photography #frozen #timelapse #antartica #scottbase
