@charlottehallqvist: When fighting first broke out in Khartoum, Sudan, in April 2023, it didn’t take long for people to start fleeing across Sudan’s southern border into South Sudan. One of the closest border crossings was in Renk County, a remote and difficult-to-access part of the country. To reach Renk at that time, we had to fly to Maban, where one of our field offices and refugee camps were located, and then drive for eight hours straight to get to the border. Supplies, emergency aid, cars, water trucks, and staff also took the same route to set up the emergency response and assist the people arriving. Eventually, a small airstrip was cleared so that Renk could be accessed by air, but only small planes could land. Providing life-saving humanitarian aid in remote border areas can be a huge logistical challenge.
