@itskaitlynj: they never talked to us pre surgery how this might have been an option, so when I woke up from my Brain and spine surgery I couldn’t talk or even move my hands. They were handcuffed to the bed (bracelet reminders) for my safety, so I wouldn’t pull out the ventilator. I had so much swelling from surgery I couldn’t breathe, so they had to wait till swelling went down until it was removed, but waking up like that is absolutely terrifying. I started writing letters on my mom’s hand and the first thing I wrote was an “R” for Rivers, my boyfriend #craniocervicalinstability #chiarimalformation #ehlersdanlossyndrome #brainsurgery #chronicillness #spinesurgery #cci #ventilator

As an ICU nurse and someone who knows how much I’d freak out if this happened to me, I try to be really in tune with my patients in this situation.

My husband was surgically intubated for a respiratory emergency. When I met him in the ICU afterward, he had restraints on. He wrote on a note pad “what did I do to deserve these? lol” 😂

This is why I think a respiratory therapist should explain what the ventilator is and how it is a possibility after surgery. There’s not enough education on this.

My baby sister had to go through this after a freak car accident, pulled her vent out somehow while she was restrained and when she could finally talk she would just say help me and that broke me.

My husband did this when he couldn’t talk. He wrote “help” and the nurse saw and said “don’t” because she could tell I wanted to so bad…..

After surgery I was “asleep” and couldn’t speak or move for what felt like hours but was fully aware of what was going on around me and in so much pain. That was terrifying

My brother had a traumatic brain injury. I walked in and saw him for the first time on life support and tied to the bed. It was quite a sight I wasn't ready for.

I get it. So scary and frustrating. I’d panic because if the restraints and try to yank that tube out every chance I got. I wish they would’ve sedated me more when it got so bad.

They’re wrists restraints to prevent the patient from pulling out their ET tube. I know it’s scary but the alternative is worse.

I demanded to be extubated as long as I was stable. They told me I’d be intubated for at least 3 days following my planned c-section with ECMO involved. Thankfully they didn’t keep me intubated. Scary

I woke up from surgery from a bad car accident tied to my bed as a kid and it is pretty scary! I did have a great nurse though who was there and calmed me down.
