Don’t mind the food tipping, but tipping at the bar when someone hands me a drink drives me insane

Not that I agree w the system, but it’s not that complicated. Just leave 20%, unless your a large group or the restaurant autograts a certain amount (just pay). Am I missing some mysterious 3rd way?

It's the fact that tips are a percentage that's wrong. Why should a waiter get a bigger tip for serving an expensive bottle of wine than a jug of water. It's the same work.

But why always 20% i mean there is no extra work involved from the staff if i order something that is $20 vs something that is $100.

So if they don’t pay living wage, is the food way cheaper?

Totally agree! Tipping in America can be so confusing, especially for tourists. Glad to hear it's getting better though!

Imagine NOT paying ur employees enough, and then brainwashing ur citizens to think they have to pay the staff.. Only in america, I swear, they are the only ones dumb enough to fall for it.

Tips should be an extra payment for good service and not a replacement for poor wages.

no. The onus is not on the consumer to pay your staff. signed, every country in the world outside of the USA

Tipping in the US might be ok if the service was decent. Not the fake smile and cheque thrown on the table before I've finished eating.

My presence at your establishment is already my contribution to your livelihood, I should have to then tip on top of that IF the service is sub par.
